According to Kotaku (who got it from the Wall Street Journal), Sony is planning to release a smart phone that can play PSP games. Can we say, "duh"? I mean, we've only been saying they need to do this for...6 years? Or however long the PSP has been around? I'm actually pretty pumped, though. If they do that, I'm probably in. Better late than never.
What about you? Good move or more iPhone fodder?
I think it can be a really good move for Sony. If only if they get the interface right. I've played with a lot of friends phones that have the touch screen interface but it just didn't run as well. One thing the Song PSPhone, if I may call it that, can definitely have the advantage over the iPhone is buttons and a analog stick. Let's face it I only like playing casual games where I only have to press here or there to accomplish things. I tried playing Assassins Creed lite on the iPhone and it just didn't scream buy me.
ReplyDeleteI hope Sony is as Indy Developer friendly as Apple. This could really shift the gaming market. If they are I'm almost willing to dip my hand in creating a game.
What would happen to the PSP name though? Would it be better to be a PSP2 with cell phone operation or just a Sony Ericsson cell phone capable of playing games.
ReplyDeleteAnalogue stick and actual buttons would be a great addition, but it would have to be well incorporated into the devices design. Like the PSP go, the joystick and buttons are hidden away in a sliding design. If the PSPgo had one extra analogue stick, touch screen interface, cell phone operation and a camera built in... yea that would be awesome. The technology is there after all. Just needs to come together nicely that appeals to a broad range of consumers and not just gamers.
Also if Sony was indy friendly then yea, would definetly be a huge competitor to the iPhones broadrange market of apps. Sony however as a company strike me as very one sided in terms of user friendly for software developers. I mean look t the PS3. Developers still bitch and moan about how much a pain in the arse it is to make games for the PS3...
