Knytt Stories Design Tour

These design tours are old news, but the uninitiated should check them out. Courtesy of the most excellent Wolfire Games Blog. They provide a rich, sophisticated analysis of some lesser-known gems. This design tour is about Knytt Stories, an atmospheric 2d platformer with clever art and tight controls.

Wolfire Games are also behind Overgrowth, and have posted fascinating development articles about their engine's use of triangle mesh voxelization, among other things.

  1. Wow, this is a really interesting video. As a fan to platforming genre, I think these design elements are interesting. In particular the fact you can't kill a single creature in the game is a very rare and interesting design choice. Many people bash Mario for the lack of stories but like this video's narrator said, my reason for progression is for the challenge. I think that's why Nintendo games have such strong progression. Metroid is probably their biggest example.
