Does Japan like Borderlands?

Though Borderlands has been released in the west since last October. In the land of the rising sun, Borderlands was released just last month. When it comes to RPGs we know that Japan and the west don't see eye to eye on the core mechanics. So how well does this fun to play coop game hold up in Japan?

The following is a translation of a article from Yahoo!Japan's game section. Translated by your truly. ;) Enjoy the read!!!
Recently, it seems even in Japan people who like first person shooters have increased. This is a genre where you gain instant satisfaction from the feeling of being on a battlefield and heated gun fights. With that add the elements of a RPG and then you'll have "Borderlands."

The game's genre can best be labeled as a "role-playing shooter." Players can enjoy the speedy battles of a FPS and the fun of steadily gaining experience of a RPG at the same time. In a normal FPS after battles the only thing left is the players battle record, this is used to keep the fun of the battle itself. If players defeat enemies level up and complete quests, the places they can go increases. It also has second play through that's particularly attractive in RPGs.

The setting in Borderlands is a barren planet called Pandora. Players will aim to make a quick fortune, make use of weapons like sub-machine gunes and sniper rifles, and subdue monsters and bands of bandits. With the ability for a four player coop game, players can work together to fight enemies and with a buggy they can race around the wide maps. Even though, it's a barren world, the characters and scenery have a cartoonish humor. Because of this the game doesn't have the characteristic of feeling brutal.

If players level up, skill up, and find strong weapons then players can oppose strong foes. This game I can't only recommend for existing FPS fans but also for players who haven't played a FPS before. Players should by all means invite friends and experience this new sensational world of a roleplaying shooter.

  1. I really do hope it gets success outside of the US. It's really a great co-op game. I think they could stand with a few more cut-scenes (or interactive cut-scenes like a Mass Effect) to flush out your character. It does kind of suck that you never actually see your character other than at the very beginning of the game when you're picking them.

  2. So far in Japan it's only for Xbox 360. This game can help get those not interested in FPS, because of the RPG elements.

I'm actually trying to find more impressions like this for western games in Japan. I think they make interesting articles.
