Look into the future of 2010

What games are you looking forward to this year? I know the two games for the first quarter of 2010 are Heavy Rain for the PS3 and No More Heroes: Heroes Paradise! I've really been jealous of Wii owners for this one and will be happy to get my hands on it when it gets released this year. With no American release date in sight, I might have to import this one.
Now with that out of the way, I like to talk about Heavy Rain.

I mentioned that I like adventure games. Heavy Rain might be the closest thing we'll get to a next-gen adventure game. It has that nice Silent Hill vibe to it, next gen graphics, and a good crime/detective story going on. I'm really looking forward to this. More then God of War 3. More then Final Fantasy XIII. This is one game I want to pre-order if I can. I know this game wont sell well as a new IP with everything that it is coming up against...but this is something I have been waiting for!

I know it's already released but I would like to give Darksiders a chance down the road. It looks like a dark, next-gen Zelda game and I've always been a fan of Zelda. It seems to be getting decent reviews too.

Also looking forward to the translated version of Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth. I played the Japanese version already and it was pretty fun but I know I'm missing out on a lot. I don't have the fluency to understand all the details that well. For adventure fans I think this is a must buy title!

Hmm...even though I said games for 2010, I guess all I can think about is Q1 of 2010. Let me hear what you guys are waiting for!

  1. Great post! I'm with you on Heavy Rain, though I am going to wait until after FF XIII. Between now Borderlands for PC to start over, and White Knight Chronicles tomorrow, which will carry me into FF, I won't have time until after that, but I am definitely looking forward to it. I LOVE adventure games, and because it is also all about decision making, I think the Mrs. might find time to play it and have a completely different gameplay than I will.

Never got into the GoW games. My neighbor is HUGE into them, and let me borrow the first two, but it really didn't do anything for me. Platforming doesn't carry the same appeal it once did for me. Like growing up, my friends and I were masters of Ninja Gaiden games for the NES. We'd play all night to beat the game (Remember back before there were save points?) But now the frantic pace of the games kind of puts me off. The game looks incredible, though. I will probably watch my neighbor play it a bit just to see the visuals.

Darksiders is getting mixed reviews. I hadn't heard anything about it until the podcasts I listen to started to discuss it. At first, they loved it, but they were complaing about the battling as compared to Bayonetta, which they had just beaten. I guess that game raised the bar, so everything else now seems clunky to them. But it defintely might deserve a look. If you get it, I can't wait for your review.

I've never heard of Ace Attorney Investigations. I MUST KNOW MORE!

For me, this year is mainly WKC, FF XIII, and Mass Effect 2. I am also hyped about Rockstar's "Red Dead Redemption". Supposed to be like GTA in the wild west, without all the ridiculous murdering of hookers and stuff. I never liked GTA games, and I understand them being out there and being successful, because some people want to live out their dark desires, and that gave them an ability to do it. But not me. Red Dead Redemption looks cool because I've always wanted to play an open-world, western based game with a story driving it kind of like a Fallout 3. Conceptually, it sounds awesome, but I'm getting a bit nervous because the spouses of the developers are talking to the news complaining Rockstar is overworking them. Not sure if that means anything, but if the developers get unhappy, it could mean they let it show in the quality of the game. I sure hope not.

Mass Effect 3 is supposed to be out by Christmas, but I'll believe that when I see it.

The only other thing I am really excited about is FF XIV Online. If there were ever an MMO I could really get into more than Guild Wars for me, it would probably be this one. If you guys all jumped on it, I could see years of questing together. But my expectations are enormous, so if it doesn't deliver, I will maybe have to skip. (I skipped FF XI mainly because I couldn't afford to pay a subscription back then). So we'll see.

What a huge year after a drought for so long.

I need to get some Wii games sometime!...

  2. I'm like you BK. Right now there are so many great games coming out this first quarter. I too am really looking forward to Heavy Rain. I like the idea how the story changes each time you play. From what I read if one of the four controlable characters bites the dust. Then the story moves on. There isn't a set ending in the game. I can see this one being played over and over again until I find my happy ending. I watched the latest tralier and the father character had to decide on the life of his son or the tip of his pinky. Interesting to see how that pans out.

I guess I'll list it by consoles.

    PC:
Star Craft: Even though I really suck at RTS games I remember the many lan parties I had in high school because of this game.

Mass Effect II: This game is getting great reviews, but I still want to beat the first one.

Bioshock II: Curious if the second one can surpass the first one or cave in under its pressure.

    Wii:
Metroid Prime: Other M: Team Ninja and Nintendo teaming up to make a Metroid can only lead to awesome.

Mario Galaxy 2: Mario Galaxy was such an awesome platformer. Nothing that is out right now can compare to it's tight controls, visual style, and overall fun factor.

No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle: They got rid of the hub world. CHECK! Don't have to pay for assasins anymore. CHECK! Giant Robots. CHECK! WTF type story line that make milk come out of my nose. (Based on reviews.)CHECK!

Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: I love the versus series and they say this one is just over the top fun. Lots of fanboys even claim this is better than SFIV.

    PS3:
GOWIII: I just like the beat`em up genre. Hopefully story is better than the second one.

    Heavy Rain: Look above.

Super Street Fighter IV: Wish it was a DLC but the game is coming out on a budget price. Great party game.

Red Dead Redemption: Like Landoram said conceptially it sounds great but we'll see how the reviews pan out.

FFXIV: I liked XI, I have a free beta key that came with XIII. Will give it a try when the time comes and write up my impressions.

Darksiders has gotten a lot of mixed reviews. The main complaint was story and combo system. Two of the main things that drive me when I play a game. But everyone says it's a rip off of Zelda, which makes me want to play it becuase I'm itching for a Zelda experience. We'll see. Maybe when things die down for me. Which doesn't seem like it'll be anytime soon.

    Happy gaming!

  3. @landoram

If you haven't played any of the Ace Attorney games, I highly recommend you start with the first one, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney. It's classic fun for the DS. Translation and localization is excellent.
