Setsubun Festival

This is gaming related because I learned about this on Cheapy D's latest podcast.

Apparently, there is an annual festival in Japan where the children, according their age, throw the corresponding number of roasted soybeans at their father, or other person, dressed as Oni (Demon from Japanese folklore) to drive away the demon spirits.

You have to listen to at least the first 5 or 10 minutes of his podcast to really appreciate it, but seriously, wtf? That is a wicked cultural difference.

Gaicha, is this celebrated where you are? Interested on your insights here.

  1. This is celebrated throughout Japan. You can go to a grocery store and by the beans. Some beans are packaged with a cheap paper mask. I've never experienced it myself, but I've heard many stories about it. Mainly, until jr. high school children practice this tradition. You can't walk around a town on the said day and watch fathers get pelted with beans. LOL!
